If you are already married, what was your favorite wedding gift that you received? If you are not married, what is your favorite wedding gift to give? Do you always buy something off of the bride and groom's registry?
I used to give glass pitchers with the bride's new monogram on it (my roommate was able to get me a deal at the jewelry store she worked at). Now, as a bride, I truly appreciate receiving gifts from my registry. But, I also love the little surprises! Just figured this would be a good topic for today. =)

I guess it depends on the people who are getting married. Sometimes I buy off their registry and sometimes I'll buy a really pretty serving piece from Tiffany's. The BIG blue box with white bow makes every bride-to-be smile.
One of my favorite gifts that I recieved at my shower was the domed cake plate from Williams Sonoma that also doubles as a punch bowl.

I usually was happiest to receive things on my registry. I did get a few surprise gifts that I loved, but a lot of the surprises were pretty terrible! I like the monogrammed pitcher idea a lot!
It depends on how well I know the couple, if I know them well enough to pick out something different that I think they will love, I do that. If I don't, I go with the registry.
Everything I received that was not on my registery, honestly, I took to Good Will because the items were not useful or did not match my style. I was not ungrateful, but I have a small condo with no room for extra stuff I won't use.
I had a small wedding and so I really focused on filling out my kitchen. I ended up with all of my everyday dishes, a full+ set of global knives and a bar for the living room which made me very happy. I cook and entertain and these were the items we really needed.
My best friend framed our wedding invitation. The way she had it framed looked so beautiful and matches our bedroom. I've been meaning to take pictures of it, but it was certainly a fav!
If it's a good friend, I usually stay away from the registry because I am confident I can find a unique present that they will love. But for others, like BFs side of the family or co-workers, I stick to the registry. I'd rather get something that I know someone wants and will appreciate than have to hassle them with returning something they don't like.
I agree with MC, depending on how well you know the couple (if their registeries are depleted yet!), it makes that decision easier. We gave our close friends custom framed pictures for their new house because we knew they would really enjoy them. My mom always gives the couple a nice crystal vase because "couples always need a nice vase for flowers & they will know its from me!" Who knows but it makes wedding shopping easy for her!!
I try to stick to the registry but pull it together in a special way by putting in a little "extra" or two. Like if they register for an ice bucket I like to put a bottle of champagne or wine & a nice corkscrew or something like that.
My favorite gift was very simple & not on my registry. It is a framed wedding invitation with a mirror below. Here is a link to what it looks like. Ours is a simple gold frame with a cream matte.

I can honestly not pick out my favorite gift. I love everything we have gotten and it's not even the wedding yet!
So far my fave gift has been the monogrammed silver pitcher that belonged to my fiance's grandmother. His aunts had it replated and gave it to me. It was a very special gift. When I'm buying gifts, I usually go with something off the registry.
I always stick to the registry, but like Melissa I always add something extra. My favorite gift, that I am still unsure about, since I am getting to use it all for the first time now I don't know yet. All our wedding gifts used to be in our hall's closet because our kitchen was so small nothing fit!
The favorite gift I received was from my grandmother through my parents. My grandmother passed three months before I got married. My birthday was between then and my wedding and my parents gave me the necklace that they had given my grandmother when they got married as the something old. It was also the something blue because it was a sapphire necklace (and my birthday happens to be in September and my engagement ring has a sapphire as the main stone).
What I love to give is a basket filled with pasta dishes and tools and a cookbook. There are hot mitts and an apron in it as well. Or else I like to give a picnic basket with all the essentials and a gc to a local specialty food store.
As a bride, I appreciated the people who bought off the registry. We were able to complete a lot of our china and that was something that we would not have been able to purchase ourselves.
However, my favorite gifts that we received were a few pieces of art. We received an original oil painting from a good friend who is an artist that is stunning. We also received some botanical prints from a local artist that were framed.
As a guest, I almost always try to buy off the registry (especially for people who I do not know as well.) For our closest friends and family, we usually give what was my favorite gift - a silver tray engraved with the wedding invitation. This gift is always well received (and is along the same line as the framed invitation, invitation mirror also mentioned.)

We received a beautiful glass ice bucket from Tiffany's... definitely a surprise and my favorite gift of all. I also loved getting things off our registrty, and of course getting $$$ was great as well!
As a guest I always try to buy off the registry or give $$$ since I know that's what I liked receiving the most.
I usually try to stick to the registry with a little something extra in there. One of my favorite gifts was not on the registry but I really enjoyed it. A friend of mine filled a very nice picnic basket with all sorts of fun picnic items. It was really neat and stuffed full! Fun!
